RENOVATION, MARRICKVILLE
Focus: Solar Access, Cross Ventilation
The aim of this project was to increase space, light and quality of life for the occupants - a family of 5 with kids becoming teens, more space was required. Usable living space was also at a premium and the house was cold and dark in winter.
The rear of the house, containing eat-in kitchen, bathroom, laundry and covered patio was demolished. The resulting space was then filled with a new open plan kitchen, dining and living space, with a bathroom and laundry tucked away and access to the clothes drying area instated. Essential storage space was added beneath the new staircase to the mezzanine level. The mezzanine contains the bright and inviting rumpus. Beyond this above the existing media room and 1 bedroom, a Japanese-style bathroom and extra bedroom were added, with access to attic roof storage above the front 2 bedrooms.
The downstairs living area opens via French doors to the sun-drenched back yard. The upstairs rumpus contains a huge window with louvres to allow the sun and cross-ventilating breezes to penetrate the new level.
