ACCESSIBLE ADDITIONS,
ROCKDALE

This project focused on enabling accessibility to the entire home. The changes included: lifting the floor level in the rear sunroom to make the house single-level, adding an accessible bathroom and laundry, and creating access to the dwelling. Consultancy with the NDIS was key in the design, conforming to Australian Standard AS1428 Part 1: 2009 and Liveable Housing Design requirements. The clients wanted to retain the sunny open northeast-facing aspect while incorporating changes and retaining heritage-style characteristics. The project is currently in development - photos will be added when it is complete.

  • Yellow areas are new raised floors (internal dining and bedroom, external entertaining) to match existing levels, with the chair lift to the rear yard in the top right hand corner.

  • Green areas are the new laundry and accessible ensuite.

  • Pink areas are the brick steps to the rear yard, perfect for seating looking at the view (below).

Right: An image of the concept design looking from the rear. At left is a chair lift to provide access to the rear yard. The rear windows echo the glazing in the existing sunroom (top image). A glazed curtain wall above allows light into the interior.

Aluminium louvre privacy screens on the left side of the verandah allow privacy to and from neighbours while permitting light penetration.
